Chair: Heikki Hiilamo

Session Description

Political economy is what drives the success of health reform, but it is seldom addressed directly. This panel of experts on East Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America will compare and contrast the reforms of countries as diverse as China, Vietnam, Poland, Slovakia, Chile and Brazil, bringing into the discussion experience from these and other countries to illustrate the importance and central role of the political economy in setting goals for the reforms, designing interventions and their implementation The panel will also discuss ways in which political economy affects the successes and failures of the reforms. The importance of public and private actors will be addressed along with the balance between technical and political imperatives and the ingredients that make for successful health care reform.
